Shiva to Parvati
O Saints! It is a great pleasure for me to meet all of you. Kindly tell me a story.” asked Sri Krishna.
“O Sri Krishna! You are the chief of all Three Lokas. There is nothing not known to you in these three Lokas.” said those saints.
“O Saints! For the present, I am a human being born to a human being. My mind also is in the same state. You should not forget that. Whatever you say now, is unknown to me. Is it not?” said Sri Krishna.
“O Sri Krishna! Narada is fit and eligible to tell anything to you. Hence Narada will tell a story.” said those saints. Then Narada told them the conversation between Maheswara and Uma Devi.
While going round this universe, I once visited Himalaya mountains. Parameswara was sitting in a beautiful garden. He was surrounded by Pramadha Ganas, Devatas, Sidhas, Sadhyas, Vidyadharas, saints etc. I also went there and saluted Maheswara and sat on a suitable seat.
At that time, Parvati Devi came there and closed the eyes of Maheswars from behind with her hands. For this sudden action, the entire Universe plunged into darkness. The entire creation was annoyed. There was a great confusion. Parameswara opened his third eye. Flames emanated from the third eye burnt away the entire Himalaya Mountain range. Himalaya Mountain King was the father of Parvati. Hence she fell on the feet of Maheswara and sought for mercy. Parama Siva closed his third eye. He was very much delighted. The flames extinguished. Then Parvati asked Parama Siva thus:
“O Siva! why you opened your third eye and caused this disaster? Kindly tell me if it is not a secret.” asked Parvati.
“ O Parvati!There are no secrets not known to you. I am the master of this Universe. The entire Universe looks through my eyes. When you closed my eyes, I could not see. Hence the entire Universe could not see anything, resulting in complete darkness. The entire creation was frightened. To dispel the darkness without removing your hands, the only alternative is to open my third eye.” said Parama Siva.
“O Parama Siva! Why you have four faces?” asked Parvati.
“O Parvati! in the past, there were two Rakshasas called Sundu and Upasundu. They possess great vigour, valour, mighty personalities. They are not killed with any weapon or Astra. To kill those Rakshasas, a human weapon was created by Maya. Her name was Tilottama. Maya brought her before me. She went round me. I looked at her from four sides. Hence I got four faces.” said Parama Siva.
“O Maha Siva! why your neck is black?” asked parvathi.
“ O Parvati! in the past, both divine bodies and Rakshasas churned the sea for Amrutha. First Haalahala was emanated. I swallowed and kept it in my throat. Hence my neck is black.” said Maha Siva.
“O Maha Siva! why you like Pinaka more than all other weapons.” asked Parvati.
“O Parvati! during Krita Yuga, Saint Kanva performed great Tapassu. Ant hills were grown on and around his body. One bamboo plant also had grown with good height and width. Brahma appeared before Kanva and blessed him with boons. Brahma made Sanga (a weapon made up of bamboo) to Vishnu, and Pinaka for me. With the remaining piece of bamboo, Brahma made Gaandeeva. As Brahma gave Pinaka to me, it is dearest of all weapons.” said Maha Siva.
“O Maheswara! while there are several animals in this creation, why you chose bull as your vehicle.” asked Parvati.
“O Parvati! Once, while I was performing Tapassu, several cows were grazing around me, disturbing my Tapassu. I looked at them with anger. With my harsh looks, the cows frightened. Brahma intervened and pacified the matter. At that time, Brahma presented me a bull as my vehicle. Since then, bull was my vehicle.” said Parama Siva.
“O Siva! though there are several buildings equipped with comforts, why you are staying in burial grounds amidst skulls and bones, emanating foul smell.”asked Parvati.
“O Parvati! the cruel Bhootas, Pretas were destroying the man kind. Brahma requested me to retaliate their cruel actions. I also intended to save the man kind from Bhootas and Pretas. Hence I am staying in burial grounds which is the abode for Bhootas and Pretas. Besides that, saints craving for liberation like to meditate in burial grounds. Hence I stay in burial grounds.” said Maha Siva.
“But why you apply ashes to your body, wear Trishool and wear bones, skulls and snakes as ornaments. Why you appear so frightful and fearful.” asked Parvati.
“O Parvati! The entire creation is divided into two kinds. Hot and Cold. Soft and fearful. The entire Universe is admixture of Softness and fearfulness. Softness is borne by Vishnu. I bear the fearfulness. Hence I appear to be frightful and fearful always.” replied Maha Siva.
“O Parama Siva! Kindly explain me about Varna Ashrama Dharmas” asked Parvati. Maheswars told thus:

Best deed enunciated in Sastras and Vedas
“O Grandisre! what is best deed enunciated in Sastras and Vedas.” asked Dharmaja.
“O Dharmaja! in this connection, I tell you the conversation between Narada and Pundareeka. The same question which you now asked, was put by Pundareeka to Narada. Narada told thus:
“O Pundareeka! Pancha Bhootas are five. Their attributes are five. Sense organs are ten. Mind, intellect and egoism are three. These are 23. the 24th element is Prakriti. 25th element is Purusha. He is also called as Nara. As these elements are influenced by Nara, they are called Naaras. The chief of Naras is Narayana. Narayana causes creation and destruction. That Narayana is Para Brahma, Paratatva, Paramapada, Eswara, Vishnu. Narayana is shining throughout the Universe. Narayana also is clled Vasudeva, Atma etc. There is no difference between Nara and Narayana. Therefore, Narayana is the greatest of all and he should be worshipped.
If people, for some time, think about Narayana, they attain higher regions. Atleast, at the time of leaving this body, if one chants the name of Narayana, Om Namo Narayanaya, he attains Brahma Pada because Narayana himself is Brahma. Constant chanting of Narayana Mantra vanishes all sorts of sins. Whatever be the Ashram, be it Brahmacharya, Grihastashram etc., chanting Narayana mantra is must. Otherwise, he may not attain higher regions.
Vishnu cannot be seen except with devotion. Hence Narayana is called Bhakta Vatsala.” said Narada to Pundareeka. Then Pundareeka worshiped Vishnu with great devotion.
In his dream, Narayana appeared with Sankhu, Chakra, Gadha, Sarja in his four hands, with lotus petal eyes, crown on head, ear rings for ears, with Srivatsa mole on chest, and Koustabha in his ornaments. Therefore, Dharmaja! you also worship Narayana constantly.” said Bhishma.

Naradopakhyana
sri-radhovaca dhanyo 'yam muni-sardulas
tvad-bhaktah premavan mahan

tvam apy asru-mukho yatah
Sri Radha said: That tiger of sages was a great devotee, filled with love for You. He was very fortunate. He attained a transcendental form like Yours. Your face was wet with tears of love for him.
asya deha-kriyam kartum
yogyo 'si vrijinardana
tapasa casya deho 'yam
prasphuraty amalakritih
O deliverer from evils, that sage must have performed great austerities to have attained a transcendental form like Yours.
sri-narada uvaca
vadantyam tatra radhayam
tad-deho 'py abhavat sarit
vahanti papa-hantri ca
drisyate rohite girau
Sri Narada said: As Radha was speaking these words, the sage's body became transformed into a stream that killed all sins as it flowed on Mount Rohita.
tad-dehasyapi saritam
vikshya radhati-vismita
nanda-rajatmajam praha
vrishabhanu-varatmaja
Filled with wonder to see the sage's body transformed into a stream, King Vrishabhanu's daughter Radha spoke to King Nanda's son, Krishna.

katham jalatvam apanno
deho 'yam vai maha-muneh
etan me samsayam deva
chettum arhasy aseshatah
Sri Radha said: Why did this great sage's body become a stream? O Lord, only You can cut apart the bewilderment I feel about this.

tasmad asya tu deho 'yam
rambhoru dravatam gatah
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: That king of sages was filled with love and devotion for Me. O girl whose thighs are like banana trees, that is why his body became liquefied.
drishtva tvaya mam varadam
harshito 'bhun maha-munih
jalatvam prapa tad-deho
yathaham dravatam pura
When that great sage saw Me, he became so happy that his body at once melted and became a liquid, as My own body also became a liquid in the past.

sarvam tvam vada vistarat
Sri Radha said: O master of the demigods, O ocean of mercy, how did Your body become a liquid? This fills Me with wonder. Please tell Me this story in great detail.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: The sages tell the ancient story of this pastime. When one hears it his sins become destroyed.

asrijat prakritim sasvat
tapasa mad-varojitah
In ancient times Lord Brahma, the progenitor of the living entities, was born from My lotus navel. He performed austerities, and with My blessings he created the material universe.
utsangan narado jajne
brahmanah srijatah subhah
bhakty-unmatto mat-padani
nijagau paryatan mahim
From the creator Brahma was born a saintly son named Narada who, mad with love for Me, wandered the worlds singing songs about Me.
ekada naradam praha
devo brahma praja-patih
prajah srija maha-buddhe
vritha cankramanam tyaja
One day Lord Brahma, the pregenitor of the living entities, said to Narada, "O very intelligent one, please father many children. Give up this useless wandering."
naradas tad-vacah srutva
prahedam jnana-tat-parah
na srijami pitah srishtim
soka-mohadi-karinim
Hearing these words, Narada said, "Father, I am eager for transcendental knowledge. I will not create children. Creating children is the cause of bewilderment and grief."
karishyami harer bhaktim
tat-kirtana-samanvitam
tvam api srishti-racanam
tyaja duhkhaturo bhrisam
I will create devotion for Lord Krishna and songs about His glories. You should give up the creation of children, which brings only sufferings.
kruddha sasapa tam brahma
praha prasphuritadharah
sada gana-parah kalpam
gandharvo bhava durmate
His lips trembling with anger, Brahma cursed him, Fool, you like to sing. Become a gandharva for a kalpa."
evam tac-chapato radhe
gandharva upabarhanah
babhuva gandharva-patih
kalpa-matram suralaye
O Radha, because of this curse Narada became the gandharva Upabarhana. For one kalpa he was the leader of the gandharvas in the world of the demigods.
ekada brahmano loke
stribhih parivrito gatah
sundarishu manah kritva
jagau tala-vivarjitam
One day, accompanied by many women, he came to Brahma's planet. His mind thinking of the beautiful women, he sang without a proper tala rhythm.
punar brahma tam sasapa
tvam sudro bhava durmate
athasau brahma-sapena
dasi-putro babhuva ha
Again Brahma cursed him, "Fool, become a sudra!" By Brahma's curse he then became a maidservant's son.
sat-sangena pura radhe
prapto 'bhud brahma-putratam
bhakty-unmatto mat-padani
nijagau paryatan mahim
O Radha, again he was born as Brahma's son, and again, mad with love for Me, he wandered the worlds singin

Narada became the king of sages and the best of devotees. A blazing sun of transcendental knowledge and a pure devotee very dear to Me, Narada always meditated on Me.

One day, as he was traveling where he wished, seeing many different worlds, and singing many songs, Narada came to the place named Ilavrita-varsha.
yatra jambu-nadi syama
jambu-phala-rasodbhava
tatha jambunadam nama
suvarnam bhavati priye
O beloved, in that place is a dark jambu-juice river that becomes the golden river named Jambunada.
tad-dese veda-nagaram
ratna-prasada-nirmitam
dadarsa narado yogi
divya-nari-narair vritam
In that place the yogi Narada saw the city Veda-nagara, which was filled with jewel palaces and divine men and women.
kamscid vai pada-rahitan
vigulphan janu-varjitan
vijanghan jaghanavyangan
krisorun kubja-madhyakan
slathad-dantonnata-skandhan
natanana-vikandharan
stri-janan purushams casav
anga-bhangan dadarsa ha
There he saw the men and women were all deformed. Some had no feet, some no ankles, some no knees, some no legs, some twisted hips, some emaciated thighs, some disfigured torsos, some loosened teeth, some hunched shoulders, some bowed heads, and some no necks.
aho kim etac citram hi
sarvan drishtvavadan munih
sarve yuyam padma-mukha
divya-dehah subhambarah
Seeing them all, the sage Narada said: "What is this wonder? You all have lotus faces, splendid forms, and beautiful garments.
kim deva upadeva va
yuyam kim rishi-sattamah
vaditra-sahitah sarve
ramya-gana-parayanah
"Are you devas? Are You upadevas? Are you great rishis? You sing and play on your instruments very beautifully.
anga-bhangah katham yuyam
vadatasu mamaiva hi
ity uktas tena te sarve
pratyucur dina-manasah
"Why are you deformed? Please tell me." Addressed in this way, all the people, unhappy at heart, replied.

maha-duhkham mune jatam
asmakam tanushu svatah
tasyagre kathaniyam vai
duri-kartum ca yah kshamah
The ragas said: O sage, our bodies have suffered terribly. We will tell you how these sufferings may be thrown far away.
raga vayam veda-pure
vasamah sarvada mune
anga-bhanga vayam jatah
karanam srinu manada
O sage, we are ragas and we live in the city of Veda-nagara. O gentle and humble one, please hear how we became deformed in this way.
jato hiranyagarbhasya
putro narada-nama-bhak
premonmatto vikalena
gayan dhruva-padani ca
Lord Brahma has a son named Narada who, mad with love, sings the wrong melodies at the wrong times.
vicacara mahim etam
svecchaya sa maha-munih
vikale tasya ganais ca
visvarais tala-varjitaih
viganais ca vayam sarve
anga-bhanga babhuvima
He is a great sage that wanders the words as he wishes. But his singing the wrong songs at the wrong times, with the wrong notes and without a proper rhythm, has broken the limbs of our bodies.
iti srutvatha tad-vakyam
narado vismito 'bhavat
uvaca gata-mano 'sau
ragan parihasann iva
Hearing these words, Narada became astonished. Humbled, and trying to smile, he spoke.

jnanam vai kala-talayoh

vadatasu mamaiva hi
Sri Narada said: How can one obtain knowledge of the proper times and proper rhythms of music? Please tell me.

tada syat kala-vin munih
The ragas said: Goddess Sarasvati is the dearest beloved of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of Vaikunthaloka. One who learns from her will know the proper times of musi

After hearing their words, Narada, who is very kind to the distressed, went to Mount Subhra to obtain the mercy of Goddess Sarasvati.

nirannam nirjalam vani-
dhyana-yuktam vrajesvari
O queen of Vraja, for one hundred celestial years Narada performed austerities. Fasting from food and water, he meditated on Goddess Sarasvati.
subhram nama visrijyatha
pavitri-krita-bhu-dharam
narado nama sailo 'bhut
tapasa naradasya ca
Purified by Narada's austerities, that mountain ceased to be called Mount Subhra. Now it is called Mount Narada.
tapo-'nte agatam sakshad
vag-devim sri-sarasvatim
vishnoh priyam divya-varnam
apasyan narado munih
When his austerities had come to their end, the sage Narada personally saw splendid Sarasvati, the goddess of speech and the beloved of Lord Vishnu.
parikramya natananah
tad-rupa-guna-madhurya-
stutim cakre munisvarah
At once standing up, bowing down, and circumambulating Her with bowed head, Narada, the king of sages, spoke many prayers glorifying her beauty, virtues, and sweetness.

navarka-bimba-dyutim udgalaj-jvalat-
tatanka-keyura-kirita-kankanam
sphurat-kvanan-nupura-rava-ranjitam
namami kotindu-mukhim sarasvatim
Sri Narada said: I offer my respectful obeisances to Goddess Sarasvati, whose face is more beautiful than millions of moons, whose glistening anklets tinkle melodiously, and whose glistening crown, earrings, bracelets, and armlets eclipse the glory of the bimba fruit and the rising sun.
vande sadaham kalahamsa udgate
calat-pade cancala-cancu-sampute
nirdhauta-mukta-phala-hara-sancayam
sandharayantim subhagam sarasvatim
Again and again I offer my respectful obeisances to beautiful Goddess Sarasvati, who wears a necklace of pearls splendid as a host of flying swans with restless feet and beaks.
varabhayam pustaka-vallaki-yutam
param dadhanam vimale kara-dvaye
namamy aham tvam subhadam sarasvatim
jaganmayim brahmamayim manoharam
I offer my respectful obeisances to you, beautiful Goddess Sarasvati, who hold in your pure and splendid hands a vina and a book, who grant the blessing of fearlessness, and who have come to this material world in your spiritual form.
tarangita-kshauma-sitambare pare
dehi svara-jnanam ativa mangale
yenadvitiyo hi bhaveyam akshare
sarvopari syam para-raga-mandale
O goddess dressed in white silk tossed by graceful waves as you walk, O auspicious one, please give me knowledge of music. Make me the best of musicians. Make me unrivaled among musicians.

sa vidyavan bhaved iha
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: A person who rises at sunrise and recites this splendid prayer Narada spoke to Goddess Sarasvati, a prayer that removes the numbness of ignorance, becomes a great scholar in this world.
tatah prasanna vag-devi
naradaya mahatmane
devadattam dadau vinam
svara-brahma-vibhushitam
Pleased, Goddess Sarasvati gave to the great saint Narada the vina named Devadatta, which was decorated with spiritual sound.
ragais ca raginibhis ca
tat-putrais ca tathaiva ca
desa-kaladi-bhedais ca
tala-mana-svaraih saha
shat-pancasat-koti-bhedair
antar-bhedair asankhyakaih
gramair nrityaih sa-vaditrair
murchana-sahitaih subhaih
vaikunthasya pateh sakshat
priya mukhya sarasvati
svara-gamyaih padaih siddhaih
pathayam asa naradam
Goddess Sarasvati, the dearest beloved of the Lord of Vaikuntha, then taught Narada the different ragas and raginis, their dervitives, the proper times and places for the different kinds of music, the different rhythms, the five-hundred-and- sixty-million divisions and numberless sub-divisions of scales, the various dances, the different musical instruments, and the different kinds of modulation.

vag-devi vishnu-vallabha
In this way Sarasvati, the goddess of speech and the beloved of Lord Vishnu, made Narada unrivalled in the circle of musicians. Then she returned to the spiritual world of Vaikuntha.
